“Children’s children are the crown of old men, and the glory of children is their father.”
Proverbs 17:6 (emphasis added
I find it so interesting that Proverbs tells us that the glory of children is their father. Indeed, would the “normal” teenager nowadays EVER be caught saying that? Not many.
I especially dislike the children’s shows that are on now. Parents are portrayed as dumb, frumpy know-it-alls that just want to keep the kids from having fun. The stereotypical “Dad” is a couch potato who chases away boyfriends and embarrasses his kids in public.
I could not think of anything that is further from the truth.
My dad is an upstanding, righteous man who loves the Lord with his whole heart, who provides faithfully and selflessly for our family, who cares enough about my future married life to keep me from making a dumb mistake, who has brilliant ideas, and who has an innate sense of decorum in public.
In short, I’m proud he’s my daddy, and will continue to be so. I refuse to let popular culture define my relationship with my parents.
And no, I do not have a perfect relationship with him/them. That same verse reminded me of a couple times in recent days where I have become impatient with and even disrespectful to my father. That is inexcusable. But as I have been learning, it is Christ in me that makes me able to properly respect my parents. I couldn’t do it on my own. ;)
So, remember to respect your parents today, friends! They certainly deserve it!
